Children's music
boxes are magical, especially to a small child. Imagine the wonder and surprise on a
child's face the first time she looks at the tiny ballerina dancing to "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" as a
music box opens up. Or a young boy listening to a favorite Disney song as the Disney characters spin on
top of the music box. Music boxes bring smiles to adult faces as
well.
Music boxes have been around since 1811 when they first began producing them in Sainte
Croix. Music boxes surpassed the watch making and lace industries in the town and brought renown
to the town.
Collectors prize surviving musical boxes from the 19th century and the early 20th century as
well as new music boxes made today in several countries. Today children's music boxes are
produced by several companies, including Reuge, Sankyo Seiki and the Porter Music Box Company of
Vermont.
